Volunteers make a mark in Cwmdare Country Park

October 30, 2007

Volunteer at Dare Valley Country ParkVolunteers from around the world have left their mark in Dare Valley Country Park - by creating an orienteering course for children.

Orienteering usually involves navigating with a map and compass, but the ten volunteers - from as far afield as Japan and Korea - made a course for children using wood carvings as waymarkers.

Younger children have to search for and make crayon rubbings of each of the carved designs to complete the course. School groups and families visiting the Country Park in Aberdare will be able to follow and enjoy the trail. The United Nations volunteers from countries including Japan, Korea, Turkey, France and Spain spent two weeks at the Country Park.

Emma Elliott, Project Officer at Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Environmental Education Service based at Dare Valley, said: “The UNA workcamp has been extremely successful yet again and we’ve been very lucky with the volunteers who joined us. Considering none of them knew each other on arrival - and none of them had wood-carved before - the work they produced at the end of the fortnight is amazing!

“We can’t wait to open the orienteering course to the schools and public - it will be an exciting new adventure trail for all!”
