Have Your Say on Waste Plan

November 8, 2007

Our Waste ChallengeOver the past few years, we’ve made huge efforts to recycle and compost as much as we can, and as a result we’ve helped Wales achieve an all time high household recycling and composting rate of 27%.

However, the remainder of the waste generated, whether it is a milk carton at home, printer cartridges at the office or waste materials from the factory, gets placed in a black bag or wheelie bin and sent to landfill.

Now landfill space is running out. To improve our environment the government is imposing strict waste targets to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill. If these targets aren’t met local authorities could face heavy fines.

To avoid this we need to recycle and compost as much as we can. However even with the best will and latest technologies not everything can be recycled – and this residual waste is what we need to concentrate on. There are many things that can be done with the waste that remains after recycling which will reduce the need to bury it. But we need to decide now what we do in the future

Regional Waste Plan Consultation

What local authorities do with waste affects everyone and that’s why the Regional Waste Plan Consultation has been launched. It will provide the future waste infrastructure and land use planning framework for the regions of Wales.

The Regional Waste Plan 1st Review Consultation will run from 15th October 2007 to the 24th December 2007 and will give everyone an opportunity to be part of the big decisions.

To get more detailed information about your local area and copies of the consultation documents please visit www.ourwasteourchallenge.org

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

It’s very important that every person in Wales has a say, after all, these decisions will affect us all. A survey has been designed to help your local authority make the right decision, allocate the right resources and make sure your contributions are fed into the regional waste plan.

By completing the survey you can help us:

• Identlify suitable sites for future waste treatment facilities

• Protect the Welsh environment through more controlled management of waste

• Make sure that Wales where possible deals with its own waste

• Encourage everyone in Wales to take more responsibility for their waste

• Ensure Wales meets its targets and avoids heavy fines.
