Campaigners win Battle for new Hirwaun Village Green

December 6, 2007

Local Campaigners have won a crucial battle as the Welsh Assembly Planning Inspectorate dismiss the appeal of property developers.

Action for Hirwaun
Property developers Piper Homes sought planning permission to build 128 new homes on land near the old Gloucesters and Ironworks site however they faced opposition from local campaigners who argued that Hirwaun’s road infrastructure could not sustain the increase in vehicle traffic through the village.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council refused to grant outline planning permission for the development in April 2007, leading to a three-day Public Appeal held at Hirwaun Village Hall. Local campaigners including Chris Bond and Karen Morgan spoke at the Appeal hearing in Hirwaun, under the direction of Emyr Jones on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Putting in place some protection for the future in Hirwaun

Local campaigner Karen Morgan was jubilant about the decision.

Speaking to Hirwaun Online, Mrs Morgan said : “We are now looking at putting in place some protection for the future. We have applied for village green status for the whole of the Ironworks and Gloucester site. Many thanks for your support on the journey.”
